I think i said it earlier – naartjies are my favourite fruits. Luckily they are in season three times a year. (Fresh does not always mean green…) For today’s photo I wanted to play around with the idea of stored vs. fresh food. Some difference.
When the sun is setting, between dusk and darkness, there is a moment when the light turns blue. And the world stops for a heartbeat.

I enjoy the ‘drama of cooking’. And I don’t mean the drama of MasterChef (although I really enjoy that too!). I love the chefs who are proud of what they do, and willing to take that one extra step to make the experience of eating special – even if it is just flambéing the calamari at the table.

I’ve moved ~13 times in the last 12 years -to 9 different countries and 4 different continents. The more times I move, the more important for me is that I take the time (and effort) to build a real home. Home makes me feel at home. Even when I’m still unsure where to buy my lightbulbs.
Thus the topic of my new fooling-around-in-Photoshop-project is quite appropriate. My ‘home’ world.

When you need to find something from the store, all those great items you saw just few days before, disappear form the stores. I guess they go to the same place as half of each pair of socks from the washing machine.
I love taking photos of silhouettes. Every time the sun is setting (or rising) and I see an interesting outline against it, my fingers itch for the camera. So I could not resist this one – the leaves are so delicate in the intense light of the evening, they are practically translucent.
Poetry of light.
When Stuart and I started to look for a house to buy, there was one deal-breaker: it needed a good kitchen. We had several other criteria too, e.g. reasonably sized, no need for a massive renovation, plenty of light, a fireplace, a garden (big enough, but not too big), pool (Stuart didn’t want one). Those who have visited our house know we got maybe 50% of what we thought we wanted. (To be fair, we fell in love with our house the minute we stepped in – before having time to evaluate it on most criteria in our lists).
But kitchen was non-negotiable. We both just love spending time in there. Maybe my love for kitchen explains why so many of my pictures include kitchen stuff. Or maybe it’s just all so photogenic.
(Btw. Have you noticed that most good house parties also end up with a big gathering in the kitchen? Regardless of where the food is, or where the music is, or where the comfortable chairs are…)
Friends’ birthdays make good excuses to go out and try new restaurants. Joburg is going thru quite a restaurant-boom. New (an often even good) places pop up faster than one can visit. Especially is one also enjoys cooking at home.
God mojitos, huge cake, and buzz of conversation – Happy birthday, Ridhima!

Long week at work. Water spilling. Lights.
Photoshop is still something I need to put more effort in to learn. I started an online course, but I’m not finding enough time to practise. Somehow life gets in the way – work, family, friend and this little project called 365. But I’ll keep taking baby steps…
So, today I made this ‘classic’ play with shadows.
