Day 29 – Breede
When the sun is setting, between dusk and darkness, there is a moment when the light turns blue. And the world stops for a heartbeat.
Breede river is an amazingly beautiful area. With the ongoing drought in the Western Cape, it is like a little oasis in the middle of desert.
I’ve been playing around with long exposure photos a lot lately. With the help of Robyn, Bradley and two flashlights, we created some intresting effects in the dark.
River, boat and the ‘Alligator’. That’s all.
For this Easter trip, we stayed at a farm, with a whole range of animals from bulls to monkeys to meerkats – and even a coyote. Merlin’s favourites were the ducks (or the alpacas – it was a close call). Merlin was definitely not the duck’s favourite.
Breede river is far from Johannesburg. It is almost 1,500 km away – to be exact. And that is a long way to drive.
To get to Breede before dark, we started driving at midnight. At first light of the day, out little first class passenger (the only one in the car with his own bed available for the trip) was already well used to the rhythm of driving.
I’ve spent the last week in a trip with no laptop, and no internet – and frankly better things to do than edit photos… So I apologise for the delay in posting these.
Packing is never fun. At best it is quick and relatively painless. At worst it is… well… as if you were trying to try to pack for a trip where the weather can be anything from 5-30 C, you are not sure what you’ll be doing, or where you’ll be going. But you know there will be no possibility of buying anything you may have left behind.
Having two pups in the house is maybe 5 times more effort than having just one… However, it is fun to watch Merlin and Jozi play together. Merlin is quite an introverted and calm little dog – despite being just over a year old -, so seeing him play his heart out is good. And Jozi is a sweetheart.
While all of my European and American friends are excited for the spring, the evenings are getting colder and shorter here in the Southern Hemisphere. Luckily there are still few days to dip in the pool and enjoy the heat.
Merlin’s friend Jozi is staying with us for a week – just in time for some more rain and mud. We took the pups to the park today to get rid of some of that excess energy (like it would make any difference…) when the sun came out for a while. Jozi was stubbornly refusing to accept us as the pack leaders, and ended back in the leash.
I don’t think there is any fruit as happy as a naartjie. The colour alone will make you smile.
