We had a perfect, peaceful Sunday. We snuggled under a blanket in the terrace with a hot drink and a book – for several hours. And that feeling of peace continued to that elusive heartbeat just before darkness. Blue Moment.

When the sun is setting, between dusk and darkness, there is a moment when the light turns blue. And the world stops for a heartbeat.

When I was a kid, I used to dabble with paints and drawing. One day my mum brought me these amazingly beautiful water colours from China. One set was black, and the other with all the different colours. My fingers have been itching for more than a decade now to use them, but I just can’t. They are way too beautiful to use.
Walking around the garden today, I came across these tiny little flower buds. And I mean tiny! They were maybe half a cm across. And yet they were braving the freezing night temperatures of Joburg. I’m sure there is a life lesson here somewhere, but I just took the photo.

Few years ago, South Africa suffered from a series of blackouts, as the energy supply was not sufficient. The situation sparked innovation in how to (safely!) light up homes without electricity. My favourite was this solar panel light set in a glass jar. Surprisingly effective and very cute, they are still in use, although we haven’t had a blackout in while. (Knock on wood!)
Our pool area is surrounded by a glass fence. Fence is a must to make sure puppies and (visiting) kids can’t get into the pool un-supervised. However, a solid fence would block any view to the garden from the house windows. Glass fence is thus great – although it must be washed often due to the large number of visiting birds…
Our garden has embraced the fence, and many flowers lean to it for support, creating nice reflections in the sunshine.
I admit – a lot of my pictures are of Merlin. But he is cute, willing and always available for photos.
Self-made samosas in the freezer are the ultimate just-in-case snack. Stuart and I made another batch today – with just enough fooling around in the kitchen. The problem is that when the in-case moment arrives, the samosas are typically already gone. But we can always make more.

Merlin firmly believes it is his responsibility to lead the way, whether it is in the walk thrugh the park, or – as in here – running from living room to bedroom in the evening. He typically moves too fast for a photo, so I asked him to wait a little to snap this one. Bed can wait for that one extra minute.
It’s not the first time I mention pasta as a saviour of a long evening. It’s been busy few weeks at work, and sometimes just cooking dinner becomes a challenge (Stuart is travelling again and thus being no help…) – and I’m not even mentioning the challenge of taking the daily photo. Sometimes you can combine both.
Our neighbourhood has a lot of beautiful, mature trees. And they attract a lot of birds. Throughout the year we can listen to an almost continuous bird song – not all of it pretty, but nevertheless.
