Day 256: Big, Big Pipes

The Sibelius Monument is one of the most popular sights in Helsinki. Most people think it represents organ pipes – not a totally stupid guess, considering it consists of over 600 steel pipes. However, it was intended to symbolize Finnish nature and the forests.

I don’t see it.

Nevertheless, I like the sculpture. It was (again) hugely controversial when it was unveiled, but has stood the test of time. And it’s a lot more interesting than another giant likeness.

I approach art much the same way I approach fine dining. I don’t have to like everything. But I expect it to be unexpected.
